March of Dimes Perinatal Nursing Conference: Improving Birth Before and Beyond

Perinatal Mental Illness: Myths, Facts and Pathways to Recovery, presented by Agnieszka Grabowski, MA, LCSW and Vesna Pirec, MD, PhD

Lecture Topic

Perinatal mental illness is one of the most common complications after childbirth. Despite its high prevalence rates, many misunderstandings of its presentation still persist. This lecture provides an overview of mental health disorders most commonly experienced by perinatal women. It also aims to correct many media-fueled myths and misconceptions that may negatively impact nurses’ ability to conduct screenings, provide supportive care and initiate referrals. We discuss relevant Illinois legislation, evidence-based pathways to recovery and key supportive interventions nurses can engage in to educate women and assist them in obtaining needed treatment.
