Let’s talk about “food addiction.” When it comes to food, we do not see the same chemical alterations of the brain’s neurons and circuits in one who compulsive overeats — when compared to one who is addicted to alcohol or drugs.

The diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) was not new to our family. OCD was something we were familiar with, but our knowledge on how to recognize and fight it was minimal. No parent wants to see their child struggling. And here we had to stand by and watch our daughter struggle with not one, but two, serious mental illnesses.

When we say that a person is addicted, we mean that this person will always have to abstain from the trigger foods enjoyed in the past. We are saying that there is no hope to reintroduce these foods back into one’s diet. We are saying that this person cannot have a healthy relationship with food. I reframe it to patients like this: you are not "addicted" to food; you are a compulsive eater, treatment is available and there is hope.

I recently read a People magazine article featuring Sheryl Sandberg that said: “Grief is a crash course in perspective.” Out of all the “cliché” grief quotes that have been thrown my way, this is the one that resonates the most. Perspective is everything to me now.

I remember sitting in my goodbye group, listening to these amazing men and women tell me how I was going to be so successful and happy. Yet, there was this panicked voice in the back of my head saying, “You're WRONG! I can’t!”

“Will recovery be possible? How long will it take? Am I saying the right things to my child?” Many parents and caregivers feel in the dark about how to help their loved one heal and wonder if the kind of support they are providing is in fact “the right” kind of support. You can do this. In fact, no one is more capable than you.

When my daughter was in treatment for anorexia nervosa, we learned that recovery had to become our number one priority. Nothing else in life mattered if our daughter didn't eat. Once she returned to school after eating disorder treatment, we had to formulate a new plan. This is what helped.
