The most feared and potentially deadly complication of the refeeding process of malnourished patients is the refeeding syndrome. Refeeding syndrome occurs when patients that have been nutritionally depleted begin to eat and metabolize calories. These patients have either lost 10% of their body weight the last three months or have had no nutritional intake for 10 days.

Eating disorders are debilitating. If you have an eating disorder and another co-occurring issue (substance use disorder, anxiety disorder or mood disorder), you not only tend to have more severe symptoms, you can also be more resistant to treatment. But no matter how many diagnoses you have, recovery is always possible.
