Those that go on to live lives worth living have done it on their own terms — not terms dictated by society or others about what they should look like and how their lives should be.

I believe that, for those suffering from eating disorders, gratitude can be easily overshadowed by the many daily battles the eating disorder brings — distancing individuals from feeling grateful for those they love and for experiences in life that truly matter. Gratitude helped me find my joy again — in more profound ways than I had experienced even before the eating disorder took hold of me.

I want the general public to treat people with mental illness the same as those with a physical disease like cancer or a broken leg. Treat these people with the dignity and respect that they deserve. Show them compassion and understanding. Just like with cancer or heart disease, you never know when mental illness will strike you or your family.

If a friend or family member discloses thoughts of suicide to you, we want you to know that you are not alone, and neither is the person you love. Many resources can assist you both in getting the help you need.

Our minds think countless thoughts per day — but not every thought has meaning. Some thoughts focus on future tasks, some focus on worries or regrets, and some are just strange and random. When strange and random thoughts are upsetting or distressing, we may wonder if these thoughts are signaling our secret desires.

Songs can help those in recovery get through their day. Whatever you are going through in life, you can feel the power of songs. I challenge you to dig through the lyrics of one of your favorite songs that you have had on repeat and ask what it is the artist is singing about or why you love that song. Write down what comes to you in the moment.

I was scared of what was on the other side of the doors. The real world was behind those doors and that terrified me. The time I spent in the safety of the treatment center comforted me because I knew I wouldn’t use eating disorder behaviors. I knew I was safe. But what was it going to be like on my own... in my house?

If we can find a way to truly connect to the things we care about, it makes the journey toward sobriety and recovery a much more rewarding one. We aren’t simply interrupting behaviors or abstaining from substances. We are freeing ourselves from the constant pursuit to avoid painful emotions and reconnecting to those things we truly care about.

To the older women struggling: Remember that you are not alone, you deserve a fulfilling life, and if you are willing, you have help on this journey. I will say that recovery has not been an easy journey. I have had my ups and downs, but it has been so worth it! I am an older woman, now 52, living with contentment, peace and joy. Shame and fear no longer call the shots in my life.
