For years, I tried to hide within my body. When I was 9 years old, I hid from my parents’ fighting by binge eating in the pantry. The sounds of my chewing drowned out the sounds of their accusations. Of course, I was terrified as they screamed accusations at me. So, I hid. Here's my story about how I was finally found.

Many patients complain about difficulty controlling their eating behaviors at night. They describe feeling small urges to eat during the day and then constant urges to eat between dinner and bedtime. Many people assume that men are not as vulnerable to eating disorders as women. Doctors often do not bother to screen male patients for eating disorders in the same way they might screen women. Often, providers focus on the fact that their patient is gaining weight while ignoring clinically significant eating disorder symptoms. To make matters worse, restrictive diets — that can exacerbate binge eating — are often prescribed as the recommended “cure."

While Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has been open out her struggles with food addiction, she recently confessed that she was bulimic so she could be as “beautiful and thin” as Princess Diana. During an interview on the Unlock Your Health podcast she said, “To wish you could have a mental illness to that level is a very serious place to get to.”
