This week, we will open a new hospital in Denver — called Willow. Willow will join our adult services communities to create an inclusive campus providing continuity of care for adults. Here, patients requiring 24-hour intensive, highly-focused, and multi-dimensional care will receive treatment.

I used to believe that I was not enough… not enough for my parents…. not enough for anyone… most of all — not enough for God. This was the basis of my fear and shame for so long. I used my eating disorder and drinking to calm my fears and cover my shame, but all they did was end up dragging me to the bottom of a pit where I could not climb out without help. With guidance from others and divine intervention, I finally embrace the fact that I am “enough” just as I am.

You do NOT need to be sick for people to see you. You do NOT need to be sick to be loved. You do NOT need to be sick in order to feel noticed or not alone. It is okay to let go of the sickness, because I promise you will STILL be loved by people, you will STILL be seen by others, you will STILL be cared for, just in a different way. And even better, you will learn to SEE and LOVE and CARE for yourself. Which I will tell you, is truly extraordinary.

The diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) was not new to our family. OCD was something we were familiar with, but our knowledge on how to recognize and fight it was minimal. No parent wants to see their child struggling. And here we had to stand by and watch our daughter struggle with not one, but two, serious mental illnesses.

While many people spend summertime relaxing and enjoying trips or time off, summer can bring an increase of symptoms for individuals with eating disorders. People often say things like, “we will wait and hope that things get better” or “we have more important priorities” — but this sends the wrong message. Would you take the same approach with any other serious illness?
