Binge eating disorder is both under-diagnosed and yet the most prevalent eating disorder. In fact, there are 2.5 times more people with binge eating disorder than with anorexia and bulimia combined. When we are willing to acknowledge that binge eating disorder is a real illness, we can also be willing to do the work necessary to beat it — and, thankfully, there are resources in place to help us do the work.

Before the 1970s and 1980s, little was known about eating disorders. Eating disorders were present, of course, but they were not identified as such or treated appropriately. Eating Recovery Center’s Dr. Emmett Bishop shares a brief history of how far the field of eating disorder treatment has come, how therapy for eating disorders has evolved — and where the field is going:

Getting Real as a parent of a son with anorexia nervosa began with my accepting that eating disorders were real for males, too. Reflecting back on the first year of my son’s illness, I see an infinite number of missteps. I’d like to share a few of them here in the hopes that perhaps other parents can learn from our mistakes.

Today’s blog shares history. Since the 1980s, major advances have been made in the field. Now, people recover from eating disorders every day. As we reflect on the history of eating disorder diagnosis and treatment, it’s important to remember just how far the field of eating disorders has come.

Mount St. Joseph University senior and voice major Maria Bruce has decided to take action. She has organized a Carpenters Anniversary/Tribute Concert to be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 25, 2018. Maria hopes that the concert will both pay tribute to Karen Carpenter and raise awareness of how eating disorders are still taking lives every day. We talked to Ms. Bruce about the tribute concert and this is what she shared with us.
