The lyrics were no longer about finding myself after a bad breakup. That day, I was singing to the hopelessness and despair that had settled into my life. I began to feel empowered. I sat up straighter; I felt stronger. I was ready to stand back up again. As I sang, I was reminded of a very important truth: mental illness is about falling down and, most importantly, standing back up — even when we don’t believe that we can. Maybe, I could recover. I thought, as I stood up to walk out of the room.

If you’re obsessing about your shape, it’s helpful to know the difference between two mental illnesses: eating disorders and body dysmorphic disorder. Both disorders are associated with depression and low self-esteem. It can be really confusing to tell these two disorders apart.

Society tells us that there is a right and wrong way to eat, that certain foods are “good” and others are “bad.” But, food is just food; it doesn’t have a moral value. If I eat intuitively and take perfectionism out of the kitchen, I will eat in a balanced way. And my body will achieve its own ideal weight, which is not a perfect number in a magazine.

We can face our fears. Too many of us stay stuck because we are afraid of what others might think about our problems. Even if we don’t struggle with social anxiety, we might be paralyzed by fear of something else. As Eleanor Roosevelt says quite simply, “You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” That’s exactly what Lindsey did.

The loss of my friend Jenn is the harshest reminder of why we do what we do. The healing journey is long and arduous, no doubt, but we must have hope and keep moving along because people can and do fully recover. As we begin a new year, consider how you might strengthen and revitalize your fight.
