October is National Coming Out Month so we are encouraging our trans friends to come out of the closet about their mental health issues and eating disorders this month. But we also encourage everyone else to do their part to make coming out easier. Zach Rawlings MA, LPC explains.

Claiming that I had an illness and being a part of the solution could only be achieved when I accepted myself and everything I was struggling with — including substance abuse. When I claimed my realness — all of it — I claimed myself.

I am convinced that being intentional in our time out in nature can help heal our wounds. It doesn’t require long periods of time in the wilderness hiking and backpacking. I find some of these benefits from short times in nature, too. You can also allow yourself to be touched by the tenderness in nature. Give it a try.

If a person has just an eating disorder OR a substance abuse problem, it can feel like an overwhelming and impossible challenge. When these diagnoses occur together, the mountain of recovery can seem that much tougher to climb. Please remember that there is hope for full recovery from both eating disorders and substance use disorders. Our team here at ERC/Insight is ready to help.

Sometimes, in eating disorder recovery, we find ourselves drinking to excess to cope with the anxiety that we so often feel. So, drunkorexia isn’t just a problem for people with eating disorders, it can be a problem in the first few years of recovery to deal with the anxiety and discomfort surrounding the food you have to eat. Here's my story:

I am 4 years into my recovery from my eating disorder, yet self-compassion is still something that I have to mindfully practice. Why are we not taught how to practice self-compassion or what that even looks like? Where were those episodes of Mr. Rogers and Reading Rainbow — because I missed them. Here is what I've learned about a self-compassion practice - and how you can create your own.

How many of us actually pick up our mobile phones seeking connection? And how many of us feel highly disconnected, discouraged, or even depressed afterwards? Glamourous pictures of celebrities, photos from a party we weren’t invited to, or reading about aggravated political situations can certainly make us feel bad — especially if we are exposed to this content when we are already feeling down. I am not advocating avoidance of Internet and social media. It’s how you relate to it that matters.
