My son died by suicide after a two-year battle with anorexia on November 20th, 2015. Thankfully, though, in that first year after losing Justin, there were times where I could start seeing light again. As much as I miss my beautiful little boy, his spirit is always with me.

Recently, Prince Harry discussed his own struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, which were at times triggered by being in a crowded room. Some things that helped Prince Harry cope with his own anxiety issues was to join the military, serve in Afghanistan and develop the Invictus Games, a sporting event for wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women.

Many people assume that men are not as vulnerable to eating disorders as women. Doctors often do not bother to screen male patients for eating disorders in the same way they might screen women. Often, providers focus on the fact that their patient is gaining weight while ignoring clinically significant eating disorder symptoms. To make matters worse, restrictive diets — that can exacerbate binge eating — are often prescribed as the recommended “cure."

I could easily let my son’s eating disorder consume me (pardon the pun). I could easily let it define me. However, I refuse to give it that much power. Yes, my son’s eating disorder is forever a part of the fabric of my motherhood. But, I can control how I manage my thoughts and feelings. For me, I do this through making the conscious decision to live a life of gratitude.

I was the only male in my treatment center and yet I felt like we were all speaking the same language. In treatment, I learned that I was not alone and that recovery was possible — though it would be a few more years before I fully started to embrace recovery.

We applaud these celebrities who consistently use their public platform to speak out against body shaming and encourage body positivity. For those who’ve experienced their own struggles with eating disorders, we are grateful that they have honestly and bravely told their story as a way to raise awareness and remove the stigma of mental illnesses.

I find as time marches on and your child recovers, you are left to your own thoughts, sometimes for the first time in months. Finally, you have time to assess the emotional toll an eating disorder personally has taken on you. Moving forward for everyone is healthy and living in the present not the past is essential for familial healing.
