My son died by suicide after a two-year battle with anorexia on November 20th, 2015. Thankfully, though, in that first year after losing Justin, there were times where I could start seeing light again. As much as I miss my beautiful little boy, his spirit is always with me.

Men can fall victim to eating disorders, too, and there is nothing to be ashamed of. You can get better. This doesn’t have to be your life. I am your neighbor — just one person who will lend you a hand and help you march out of the fire. And I know there will be many others. You just have to let us in.

So many years in the making — years of hovering from a distance, allowing you the space to find your way. Silently rejoicing as I saw you re-emerge from your illness. Each year getting better than the one before. And now, to hear you say the words you knew I needed to hear. I will carry it with me always.

Dear Boy in the Closet, I want to first begin by saying that I love you and that today I am so grateful. You are the part of my life I cannot imagine living without. Thank you for never giving up on me and for patiently waiting for me to open the door so we could play once again.

Getting Real as a parent of a son with anorexia nervosa began with my accepting that eating disorders were real for males, too. Reflecting back on the first year of my son’s illness, I see an infinite number of missteps. I’d like to share a few of them here in the hopes that perhaps other parents can learn from our mistakes.

Recently, Prince Harry discussed his own struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, which were at times triggered by being in a crowded room. Some things that helped Prince Harry cope with his own anxiety issues was to join the military, serve in Afghanistan and develop the Invictus Games, a sporting event for wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women.

Many people assume that men are not as vulnerable to eating disorders as women. Doctors often do not bother to screen male patients for eating disorders in the same way they might screen women. Often, providers focus on the fact that their patient is gaining weight while ignoring clinically significant eating disorder symptoms. To make matters worse, restrictive diets — that can exacerbate binge eating — are often prescribed as the recommended “cure."

I could easily let my son’s eating disorder consume me (pardon the pun). I could easily let it define me. However, I refuse to give it that much power. Yes, my son’s eating disorder is forever a part of the fabric of my motherhood. But, I can control how I manage my thoughts and feelings. For me, I do this through making the conscious decision to live a life of gratitude.
