In the aftermath of the latest school shootings, the safety of our children and the safety of the school environment is on everyone’s mind. If your teen seems to be impacted by a trauma, there are a number of things that you, as a parent, can do to promote a sense of safety, stability, calm, control, and support. Traumatic events are devastating, and more than half of all people will live through a trauma in their lifetime. Thankfully, help is available and there are steps we can take to support our children and ourselves.

Most of us start out with a strong, intuitive sense of our bodies' physiological needs; our bodies give us signals of hunger and fullness, and we start or stop eating accordingly. For many of us, though, the hungry/full signal-response pattern is more complicated. And, if we have a history of disordered eating behaviors, like restricting our food or binge eating, our ability to detect and respond to our body’s cues can really suffer.

Although mothers spend more time with their kids these days, they feel they are doing a worse job of parenting than previous generations of mothers. They look to others for validation — is it okay that I am supplementing with formula? Does it make me a bad mom if I can’t produce enough milk to feed my child? — and instead find more reasons to be anxious.
