I am sharing my story because everybody faces change at some point in their lives (especially during recovery) and I hope to be a beacon of hope that change doesn’t have to be scary. Change can be daunting, but you can be fearless. If, and when, change comes your way, accept it — truly accept the change you wish to see in your life. You may be amazed by the blessings that come with venturing down a new path.

Recovery has not been an easy journey for me, and this year I realize that I no longer take care of myself because I have to. I take care of myself because I want to. It’s now a privilege for me. More than ever, I want everything in my life to be meaningful. To understand why this is profound, you have to know where I’ve come from.

When I was upset during my first Christmas in eating disorder recovery, I would email my team, journal, go outside and breathe, and sometimes cry. All of those were good coping mechanisms for me. Those coping mechanisms kept me honest, helped me let go (just a little), and helped me fight back.

The winter holidays, for many of us who have struggled with eating disorders, can be really hard. Images of joyous wondrous celebrations are dimmed by our reality. Interacting with relatives, dealing with the overload of parties and activities and spending so much money can be overwhelming — not to mention that these are all food-focused holidays. In my binge eating disorder recovery, one of the greatest things I learned was, just like a holiday wish list, this:

The Body Project has been found to reduce the onset of eating disorders and touts very strong effects at reducing body dissatisfaction. The program also is decreasing eating disorder risk factors. The Body Project is a body-acceptance program supported by more research than any other body image program.
