"I have tried everything imaginable, but I simply don’t have the willpower to stop bingeing.” This is the narrative most people convey when they come to us seeking treatment for binge eating disorder. I’ve heard it so many times: “If only I had self-control, I could stop binge eating.” This is where we have it all wrong: when it comes to binge eating, willpower is a lie.

Loved ones should remember that they can help identify and contain a relapse. Loved ones, as well as the individual themselves, can: 1) Be prepared, 2) Plan ahead with a comprehensive relapse prevention plan, and 3) Identify action steps and self-compassionate self-talk in advance. Recovery is possible.

Songs can help those in recovery get through their day. Whatever you are going through in life, you can feel the power of songs. I challenge you to dig through the lyrics of one of your favorite songs that you have had on repeat and ask what it is the artist is singing about or why you love that song. Write down what comes to you in the moment.

If you’ve had moments of binge eating after following a “clean” eating diet, you may not be bingeing despite your food rules and nutrition knowledge; you may actually be bingeing because of the strict diet that you’re trying so hard to follow. Here's why.

I was scared of what was on the other side of the doors. The real world was behind those doors and that terrified me. The time I spent in the safety of the treatment center comforted me because I knew I wouldn’t use eating disorder behaviors. I knew I was safe. But what was it going to be like on my own... in my house?

If we can find a way to truly connect to the things we care about, it makes the journey toward sobriety and recovery a much more rewarding one. We aren’t simply interrupting behaviors or abstaining from substances. We are freeing ourselves from the constant pursuit to avoid painful emotions and reconnecting to those things we truly care about.
