“Fully Recovered” is Possible: Words of Wisdom from Jenni Schaefer

Jenni Schaefer, Eating Recovery Center’s National Recovery Advocate for the Family Institute, Shares Her Perspective on Eating Disorder Recovery

Schaefer Eating Recovery Center National Recovery AdvocateI’ve been fully recovered from an eating disorder for over 10 years. Back when I was struggling, I didn’t even know that those two words could exist side by side: fully recovered.

Finding full freedom from an eating disorder is absolutely possible. I don’t even talk to ED (my “eating disorder”) anymore. Yes, it gets that good. For me, getting better meant finding ongoing, continued support. It meant staying connected to my therapist, dietitian, doctors, therapy group, family, and friends.

One of the doctors who guided me along my journey was Dr. Ovidio Bermudez, Chief Clinical Officer at Eating Recovery Center. In my new role as a National Recovery Advocate for Eating Recovery Center’s Family Institute, I now have the chance to work alongside the doctor who once helped to save my life. That is how life can come full circle in recovery. What you once thought was impossible becomes very possible when you get help, commit to getting better, and never, never, never give up.

If you’re struggling with food and body image on any level, hold onto the hope that you, too, can find peace and happiness. If you haven’t already, I highly encourage you to get professional help. You might feel a lot of resistance to reaching out, and that’s normal. I did, too. Ed wants to control your life, so I can guarantee that he isn’t too happy that you’re even reading this. Recovery ultimately entails separating from Ed and finding your own unique voice, your own personality. It means making your own pro recovery decision – sometimes just one moment at a time. “Do the next right thing,” became my motto in recovery.
