ERC's New Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program

Treatment for anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders

What is Eating Recovery Center’s Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program?

Eating Recovery Center (ERC) is the only national health care system dedicated to the treatment of serious eating disorders at all levels of care.

Eating Recovery Center is one of the very few treatment centers to offer the full spectrum of recovery services for female, male, transgender, and non-binary adults, adolescents and children across its national network of partners. The availability of comprehensive recovery services provides valuable continuity of care for patients, leading to 97% of parents of child and adolescent patients and 92% of adult patients saying they recommend ERC to others in need of treatment.
We are now offering our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) through our Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (VIOP). This program combines the proven excellence of our Intensive Outpatient Program with the convenience of receiving care wherever there is a private space with a computer with video and internet access. We work with colleges all over the United States where many students struggle with eating disorders along with a lack of adequate intensive outpatient services.

Early identification and treatment of eating disorders increases the likelihood of lasting recovery. Therefore, it is crucial to have access to intensive eating disorders treatment.

This program allows for more intensive care earlier in their illness to foster recovery. The program includes:
  • Three 3-hour groups weekly including:
    • therapy groups
    • nutrition groups
    • meal support
  • One weekly individual/family therapy session
  • Bi-weekly sessions with a Registered Dietitian
To begin the admissions process, call Eating Recovery Center's Clinical Assessment team at (877) 410-9105.

Good Candidates for the VIOP Program::

  • Have been diagnosed with (or meet criterion for) an Eating or Feeding Disorder (e.g., Bulimia Nervosa, Anorexia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder or Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder).
  • Are medically stable.
  • Have struggled to progress in outpatient treatment.
  • Would appreciate and benefit from more structure/support to progress with individualized treatment goals (e.g., interrupt behaviors and/or weight restore).
  • Have found it difficult to accept a recommendation for a higher level of care.
  • Are engaging in eating disordered behaviors three days per week or more.
  • Have additional concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression, addictions).
  • Are struggling to function well due to concerns related to eating or body image.
  • Feel isolated or are without supportive others who “get it.”
  • Do not have access to recommended/specialized care (e.g., would benefit from more appointments than can be offered; are unable to travel to/from treatment facility; do not have access to Eating Disorder Specialists or a recovery-based community).
Our VIOP program is currently available for residents living in California, Ohio, Texas or Nebraska.

We are currently conducting research comparing the outcomes of our Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program to those of our Facility-based Intensive Outpatient Programs. As part of the research, you may be eligible to receive Virtual Intensive Outpatient Programming for 6 weeks if you meet the following criteria:
  • You currently live in Ohio, Texas, California, or Nebraska
  • You meet criteria for IOP level of care for an Eating Disorder
  • You have commercial or student health insurance, though it will not be utilized for treatment
  • You can commit to 6-weeks of treatment
  • You receive medical clearance to participate in the program
