Access Evidence-Based Therapies

ERC's medical and clinical leadership team includes the world’s leading eating disorder treatment experts, many of whom have actively led research supporting effective, evidence-based eating disorders treatment. The foundation of all psychoeducation groups that ERC The Woodlands provides lies within DBT, CBT and ACT.

As extensions of these modalities, we offer a variety of different psychoeducation and experiential groups related to body image, role-playing for real-life scenarios, emotional regulation and more. As patients progress through treatment, we work closely with them to ensure they are prepared and supported for life outside of treatment. At ERC The Woodlands, patients can expect to have individual psychotherapy with the same licensed primary therapist, as well as family therapy with that same therapist.

“Many of us joined the team when we first opened this location several years ago, so we’ve had such a unique opportunity to grow together as a team. There is a lot of trust between us, and so many years of experience. We’ve developed an excellent rhythm and collaboration in terms of working together and working with patients and families.”

Anna Brown, PsyD

Who We Treat

Conditions We Treat

  • Eating Disorders

An eating disorder is a treatable mental illness that includes a number of different symptoms, including extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues.

  • Anorexia

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by an obsessive fear of weight gain and a refusal to maintain a healthy body weight.

  • Atypical Anorexia

You can’t tell if someone has an eating disorder just by looking at them. See how atypical anorexia affects people in a variety of body shapes and sizes.

  • ARFID

ARFID is a lesser known eating disorder that frequently begins as early as infancy or childhood, but adults can also suffer.

  • Binge Eating Disorder

Binge eating disorder is characterized by frequent overeating – at least once a week for three months – combined with a lack of control, intense feelings of distress and several other characteristic behaviors.

  • Bulimia

Bulimia is characterized by patterns of bingeing and purging.

  • Compulsive Overeating

Compulsive overeating can involve binge eating and weight gain, but it can also involve other behaviors.

  • Diabulimia

The term diabulimia is used to describe the diagnosis of an eating disorder in an individual with type 1 diabetes. These patients intentionally misuse insulin for weight control.

  • OSFED

Some eating disorders do not meet all of the diagnostic criteria for specific diagnoses like anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

  • Orthorexia

Some people go to extremes to “eat clean” at all times. This may lead to a disordered eating pattern known as orthorexia.

Levels of Care Offered

  • Inpatient

Our Inpatient programming is designed to support adults, children and adolescents of all genders who are acutely ill and are experiencing medical and mood instability as a result of their eating disorder.

  • Residential

Within ERC Pathlight's step-down model of care, the Residential eating disorder treatment program as well as the Residential mood & anxiety treatment program offer medically stable patients a highly-structured and supportive 24-hour treatment environment.

  • Partial Hospitalization

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) offers some of the same intensity and structure of Residential mood, anxiety, and eating disorder treatment while providing additional opportunities to practice recovery outside of the controlled eating disorder treatment environment during evenings at home or in peer-supported apartment communities.

  • On-Site Intensive Outpatient Treatment

Our Intensive Outpatient program is a flexible mood, anxiety, and eating disorder treatment program that allows patients to work, go to school, or care for children during the day and sleep at home at night.

  • Virtual Intensive Outpatient - Eating Recovery At Home

ERC is removing the barriers that can keep patients with anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders from receiving treatment. Through telebehavioral health programming, Eating Recovery At Home (our virtual Intensive Outpatient Program) offers the same proven care as our in-person treatment centers.

Work with National Experts in the Field of Eating Disorders

A multidisciplinary treatment team of eating disorder professionals oversees all programming. ERC The Woodlands is part of the larger network of Eating Recovery Centers in Texas and around the country, with access to higher levels of care, including residential and inpatient programs in our Dallas/Plano location. The treatment team will work with patients and their families to ensure a seamless transition to any of our tother sites, should there be a need for a higher level of care. Patients and caregivers can work with:

  • Psychiatrists
  • Primary therapists
  • Registered dietitians
  • Case managers
  • Alumni support
  • Patient support staff

Find Recovery With Our 7-Day PHP

Research shows that eating disorder patients in 5-day, weekday-only programming struggle with eating disorder behaviors over the weekend. Since eating disorders don’t take the weekend off, neither do we. We provide programming 7 days a week for individuals in residential and PHP levels of care, because it offers our patients the best chance of recovery.

Nutrition Services

Nutritional Counseling & Education

ERC The Woodlands focuses on structured, supportive meal planning that emphasizes balance, variety and flexibility. Patients and families entering the center are supported by a registered licensed dietitian who curates a meal plan specific to their nutritional needs – all with patient input and involvement. Patients meet with their registered dietitian at multiple touchpoints each week throughout care.

ERC The Woodlands operates from a perspective of “all foods fit” and provides education from that stance, including a HAES-informed approach (Healthy at Every Size). With a demo kitchen including an oven and stove in the middle of the dining room, clinical teams work with patients to perform kitchen experientials. These activities enable patients to:

  • Participate in hands-on food exploration
  • Discover new foods and recipes
  • Work within their nutritional meal plan
  • Recreate foods they have previously enjoyed

Traveling for Care? We Can Help

ERC The Woodlands is committed to helping patients and families at every step of the treatment journey. Many patients come to the center from Louisiana and other states, and we have a specific Travel Concierge to help us eliminate barriers to care, handle all moving parts of transportation and logistics and work tirelessly to remove obstacles from your path to recovery. Our Travel Concierge additionally helps patients and families with discounted transportation, financial aid and support surrounding local accommodations.

Housing Assistance Provided

To meet the needs of diverse patients, ERC The Woodlands has two apartments located within a mile of the center. Our apartments can house 4 patients or one family unit, if a parent or caregiver is staying with a child or adolescent patient. When entering our partial hospitalization program, many patients choose to live in one of our apartment homes. While staying at our apartments, we will support transportation to and from the treatment center. If you have any questions or concerns about housing availability, give us a call today.

Ongoing Support for Young Patients and Their Families

Try family-based treatment that works

ERC The Woodlands couples evidence-based treatment with experiential work to support young patients in all aspects of the journey to recovery.

  • Evidence-based interventions include body image, self-compassion, healthy relationships and other external challenges
  • Patients participate in process groups three times a week in addition to individual therapy and psychoeducation
  • Experiential learning includes mirror and body image exposures

Find help each step of the way

Family involvement is a significant component of ERC The Woodlands’ treatment approach. Our team supports families with individual meetings and therapy sessions, in addition to group support through family education, seminars and support groups. ERC The Woodlands coordinates with other Texas centers to tailor programming for caregivers and provides local, regional and national education including:

Get academic support for students

At ERC The Woodlands, the team includes an Education Specialist for child and adolescent patients. As a certified teacher, their role on the team is to support dedicated ‘school time’ for 10 hours each week. During this time, 12–18-year-old patients participate in dedicated time for academic studies. Our Education Specialist liaises with schools and any external providers or counselors, giving the family an opportunity to retain credits, continue with school obligations and not have to make the difficult choice between attending school and getting well.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where is your center located?

ERC The Woodlands is regional to the Greater Houston area, and the center itself is approximately 35 miles north of the city of Houston.

  • Do you work with any local groups or organizations?

Clinical Director Dr. Anna Brown is the President Elect of HEDS (Houston Eating Disorder Specialists): a local nonprofit and network of professionals who self-identify as working with and being knowledgeable about eating disorders and treatment. This group includes mental health professionals, psychologists, other types of therapists, registered dietitians, medical physicians and more.

  • What type of eating disorder support do you offer once treatment ends?

Extensive aftercare planning conducted by an Aftercare Coordinator helps ensure you have a “plan of action” for continuity of care and maintaining recovery progress. Pre-arranged appointments are set with an outpatient team experienced in the treatment of eating disorders.

We acknowledge that transitioning from treatment to a home environment can be challenging, and our community outreach team is here to support you every step of the way. We’ll send follow-up emails and phone calls within days of discharge, highlighting alumni resources including virtual support groups, upcoming events, blogs, our Mental Note podcast and additional hands-on practical tools. Whether you need words of encouragement or referrals for outpatient treatment, our team will be here to support you long after treatment ends.

  • How long will I be in treatment?

Prospective patients and families often feel anxiety or concern about the length of treatment. The duration of treatment entirely varies on specific patient needs, but we do work closely with caregivers and families on ‘outings’ including meal passes, a therapeutic half-day or even full day passes later in treatment to give patients more exposure. Our primary goal is for patients to integrate learnings from treatment into their home environment.
