There are numerous medical issues associated with eating disorders, and it’s often hard to know when these issues require urgent attention. We will be reviewing the most common medical complications seen in eating disorder patients and helping you understand what needs to be referred urgently to a primary care doctor, a higher level of care, or even an emergency room.
The target audience for this continuing education program is medical and mental health care providers and other clinicians treating individuals who present for care with mental health concerns. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about mental health concerns.
Educational Objectives
- Identify the signs and symptoms of eating disorders that require urgent action.
- Discuss how to manage acute medical issues in eating disorder patients.
- Describe when a patient needs a referral to a higher level of care for ongoing management of eating disorder or medical issues
