Supporting Recovery Through the Holidays: A Family Approach to Treatment Ambivalence
November
06
Friday

The holiday season may present unique clinical challenges for adolescents and young adults with eating disorders and their families. Social gatherings, disruptions in routine, food-centered traditions, and appearance- or weight-related commentary can exacerbate eating disorder symptoms, increase ambivalence regarding recovery, and heighten family distress. This presentation examines how a family-systems framework can support clinicians in helping patients and caregivers navigate these stressors while sustaining treatment engagement and therapeutic progress.
The session will review the core principles and evidence base for family-based treatment (FBT) in adolescent anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, emerging evidence for adapted family-based approaches in avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and considerations for involving families and other support persons in the care of young adults. Participants will consider practical strategies for holiday meals and social gatherings; caregiver engagement; preservation of the young person’s voice, autonomy, and developmental needs; and reduction of family accommodation of eating disorder behaviors. The presentation will also introduce a structured approach to evaluating limited early treatment response and determining when treatment modifications, adjunctive interventions, or alternative approaches may be indicated.
The target audience for this continuing education program is mental health providers and clinicians working with individuals with mental health diagnoses. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about mental health concerns.
