This presentation examines the role of body image in the development of eating disorders across diverse populations. Dr. Wooten explores historical and cultural influences on body image, with particular attention to men, gay and bisexual individuals, and transgender and nonbinary populations. The session also addresses the influence of family dynamics, including the role of fathers and father figures, on body image development and eating disorder risk. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the psychosocial factors that contribute to body image concerns and disordered eating behaviors.
The target audience for this continuing education program is mental health providers and clinicians working with individuals with mental health diagnoses. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about mental health concerns.

Following this presentation, participants will be able to…
Describe the psychological, cultural, and social factors that shape body image across gender and sexual identities.
Recognize the prevalence, risk factors, and unique body image challenges experienced by male, gay, bisexual, transgender, and nonbinary individuals.
Apply inclusive, gender-affirming, and trauma-informed strategies when assessing and supporting individuals with body image and eating disorder concerns.
