The Out Loud Pride Summit, in partnership with the National Alliance for Eating Disorders.
Credits Offered: 3 CE/CME/CNE
Body image is not simply a side effect of eating disorders. It is a key clinical factor that intersects with eating disorders, anxiety, mood disorders, and substance use. Using the LGBTQ+ experience as a clinical lens, this course explores how minority stress impacts body image, identity, and mental health across diagnoses. Participants will examine gaps in traditional eating disorder frameworks, particularly around gender and representation, while gaining affirming, identity-integrated strategies they can apply immediately in clinical practice.
Event Schedule
11:00am to 12:30pm
Body, Identify & Recovery: What LGBTQ+ Experience Teach Us About Eating Disorders, Body Image, and Mental Health
This presentation examines what LGBTQ+ experiences reveal about the relationship between gender, body image, and eating disorders across all populations. Attendees will leave with affirming clinical tools, expanded screening practices, and a framework for treating the full person rather than the presenting diagnosis alone.
12:30 to 1:15pm In Practice Clinical Panel
Gender ideology and gender roles shape the relationship between body image and eating disorders for every client, not only those who identify as LGBTQ+. This panel brings together clinicians to discuss what working with LGBTQ+ individuals and communities has taught them about body image, identity, and recovery more broadly. The conversation will explore how group support and community create conditions for healing that individual treatment alone cannot, how holding gender dysphoria and euphoria as part of the clinical picture changes the work, and what providers across specialties can take back to their practice.
1:15 to 2:00pm Embodied: Voices from Recovery Lived Experience Panel
Embodiment is a powerful compass for recovery. The ongoing movement from a relationship with the body defined by control, shame, and disconnection toward one defined by presence, acceptance, and wholeness. That movement does not happen in a vacuum. It happens inside a culture that polices bodies through diet culture, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, gender roles, and social pressure that is not slowing down.
This is an intimate conversation with LGBTQ+ individuals who are navigating that reality in real time, in their recovery and in their identities. They are not on the other side of it. They are in it, doing the work of dismantling externally imposed beliefs about what their bodies should be, what they should look like, and who they are allowed to become.
