In a world saturated with conflicting wellness advice and diet culture messaging, providers are often on the front lines of clients’ struggles with body image, food, and fitness. This talk provides professionals with tools to approach nutrition and exercise conversations in a way that is trauma-informed, client-centered, and aligned with eating disorder recovery principles. Attendees will learn how to challenge harmful societal narratives, collaborate with dietitians and movement specialists, and foster a safe space for clients to redefine what “healthy” truly means for them.
The target audience for this continuing education program is substance use disorder providers and clinicians working with individuals with mental health diagnoses. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about mental health concerns.
Educational Objectives
Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
Describe the influence of diet culture and weight-normative health models on clients’ beliefs and behaviors related to food, exercise, and body image.
Apply evidence-informed, trauma-sensitive communication strategies to discuss nutrition and physical activity within the therapeutic scope of practice.
Integrate therapeutic practices with principles from nutrition and movement concepts to support client-centered, recovery-oriented definitions of health and well-being.
