This presentation explores fat stigma and bias as experienced by college students. We will examine how fat stigma impacts: access and admissions, attendance and academic achievement, physical comfort, campus climate, social interactions and extracurriculars, and marginality and mattering. We will work together to answer the question, "How can institutions of higher education improve the college experience for fat students?" with a special focus on recruitment, retention, and student satisfaction.
The target audience for this continuing education program is mental health providers and clinicians working with individuals with mental health diagnoses. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about mental health concerns.
Educational Objectives
Following this presentation, participants will be able to -
- Define fat bias and 3 ways fat bias shows up in US culture
