Eating disorders are severe conditions that affect children and adolescents with increasing frequency. They can lead to serious medical and psychological consequences. Children and adolescents have an increased potential for long-term complications; thus, providers must recognize the risk factors and screen for eating disorders in their patients. Early recognition and aggressive treatment are needed to prevent complications and chronicity. This presentation will review the latest research in etiology, atypical presentations, medical complications, and recovery goals for eating disorders in children and adolescents.
The target audience for this continuing education program is mental health providers and clinicians working with individuals with mental health diagnoses. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about mental health concerns.
Educational Objectives:
Following this presentation, participants will be able to…
- Describe the etiology and the changing epidemiology of pediatric eating disorders.
- Outline the medical complications of eating disorders.
- Discuss recovery goals with their patients and parents.
