It’s imperative that clinicians understand the interplay between eating and substance use disorders and, in particular, how they impact the LGBTQ community, which is at higher risk for both based on systemic and individual factors. Effective assessment for substance use disorders and barriers to receiving adequate care is a skill set essential for all clinicians to provide comprehensive evidence-based care. Clinical Interventions that are affirming and effectively treat substance use disorders and eating disorders will be presented.
Educational Objectives
- Discuss the interplay, similarities and differences between eating and substance use disorders.
- Identify systemic and individual factors that increase LGBTQ+ community vulnerability to substance use and eating disorders.
- Describe how to assess for eating and substance use disorders in the LGBTQ+ population as well as how substance use, eating disorders and identity intersect.
