The origins of eating disorders are known to be multi-faceted with both biological and genetic factors as well as socio-cultural or environmental influences as well. Studies have indicated that Jewish females with eating disorders are overrepresented in North America and Israel. It is hypothesized that the cultural and religious rituals around food and meals, the influence of Jewish values as well as the degree of religious affiliation within the Jewish religion play a role. This will be explored and practical treatment implications from both a psychological as well as dietary perspectives will be provided.
