In my previous two blog posts, I have explained the basic facts about food addiction and reviewed the scientific research on food addiction. In today’s blog, I explain how to treat food addiction, or as I prefer to call it, treatment of compulsive eating behavior.

In a previous blog post, I discussed “food addiction” and compulsive eating. In that blog, I shared hope that treatment for loss of control eating is possible. I believe that we can learn how to create a healthy relationship with food. In today’s blog, I want to explain a little more about the science behind “food addiction.”

When we say that a person is addicted, we mean that this person will always have to abstain from the trigger foods enjoyed in the past. We are saying that there is no hope to reintroduce these foods back into one’s diet. We are saying that this person cannot have a healthy relationship with food. I reframe it to patients like this: you are not addicted to food; you are a compulsive eater, treatment is available and there is hope.

Many well-meaning people attempt to stop eating when they are “full.” And most of us assume that this ability — to notice if we feel hungry or full — will come to us easily and naturally. Does every person know how to recognize physical sensations of hunger and fullness? Are stomach cues really enough to rely on, in order to know when to eat and when to stop eating?

In our clinic, those who seek help for binge eating disorder (BED), night eating syndrome (NES), and loss of control eating (LOC) tend to skip meals, eat light during some meals and heavy during others, graze one day and eat a lot of food the next. This random timing of meals can make binge eating and associated problems worse. Here’s how:

Certain eating disorder professionals may be surprised to learn that there is a fairly significant percentage of anorectic patients that also have autism-like symptoms. Does this mean that a large number of people struggling with anorexia also have an autism spectrum disorder? Absolutely not. In fact, a rather small percent of people with anorexia exhibit autism-type behaviors.

Eating Recovery Center offers eating disorder treatment programs for people with overweight bodies. Patients in these programs are overweight or obese and also struggle with bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, compulsive overeating, night eating, emotional eating and/or stress eating. These programs offer intensive multidisciplinary treatment for adults, including medical, psychiatric, behavioral and nutritional care. It is not an obesity treatment program or a weight management program. Unlike traditional weight loss programs, we recognize that both behavioral and biological factors contribute to being overweight, and that many overweight or obese individuals have a co-occurring eating disorder. This program offers a comprehensive treatment solution to normalize eating patterns, stabilize medical comorbidities, control weight and improve quality of life issues.
