Although many people who develop eating disorders recover, the estimated rates of recovery vary widely. This may be explained, in part, by the inconsistency in definitions used in recovery research. Defining recovery for eating disorders is important, nuanced, and has implications for both clinical and research outcomes. Clinicians treating individuals with eating disorders understand that the margins between illness and health can be unclear, making it challenging to know when someone enters recovery, is in remission, or relapsing. There are many questions to consider. “Is recovery a static state or a process? When are terms “recovered” or “in recovery” appropriate? “Is full recovery possible?”
This presentation will provide an update on the recovery literature as well as an overview of the recovery process from various clinical perspectives. The discussion will include a review of a.) the extant definitions of eating disorder recovery b.) the physical, psychological, and behavioral features of recovery c.) established predictors of recovery, and d.) suggested strategies for optimizing the recovery process. Guidance on how to utilize a comprehensive framework for recovery, with case illustrations, will be provided.
The target audience for this continuing education program is mental health providers and clinicians working with individuals with mental health diagnoses. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about mental health concerns.
