With the growing needs for mental health care, clinicians are frequently navigating care for clients who are cycling between outpatient treatment and inpatient hospitalization. This presentation will focus on helping clinicians identify clinical indicators for the need for higher levels of care for mood, anxiety, and eating disorders. Clinicians will leave the presentation with a better understanding of the various supports that are available to clients needing more than outpatient care but who are not imminently at risk to themselves or others. Research detailing the impact of inadequate treatment on providers as well as clients will be discussed. Moreover, an in-depth review of the literature on treatment barriers will highlight the experiences of diverse and multicultural populations and how these experiences impact mental health treatment. Case studies will be utilized in the presentation.
There are many barriers that prevent students from seeking the care they need for their mental health concerns. This presentation will review barriers to treatment seeking in college students and provide skills and tools to help students overcome these barriers to get the care they need. Discussion will include motivational interviewing and how to navigate working with families of college aged adults.
Educational Objectives:
Following this presentation, participants will be able to…
Define levels of care for the treatment of eating, mood and anxiety disorders.
Discuss client and provider barriers to moving through the levels of care for mental health treatment.
Describe approaches that can help motivate ambivalent clients to get the care they need.
