Gastrointestinal issues are common in patients presenting for eating disorders medical care. Some of these may have serious medical outcomes if not addressed. Many of these can make it difficult for patients to safely and comfortably enter and remain in eating disorders care. In this talk, we will walk through dental, esophageal, gastric, liver, and colonic medical complications that are directly related to eating disorder behaviors. We will discuss commonly used diagnostic techniques and medical management for these concerns. Additional gastrointestinal concerns seen more commonly in children and adolescents, including concerns experienced by youth with ARFID, will be reviewed.
The target audience for this continuing education program is mental health providers and clinicians working with individuals with mental health diagnoses. Materials are appropriate for learners with an intermediate level of understanding about mental health concerns.
