Eating disorders frequently co-occur with mood and anxiety disorders, creating diagnostic and treatment challenges for clinicians. This presentation explores the complex interplay between these conditions and provides tools for discerning which disorder is primary, and which may be secondary or symptomatic. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how to assess onset patterns, symptom function, and underlying drivers to better inform treatment planning. We will explore assessment techniques, clinical considerations, and collaborative care strategies to aid in accurate diagnosis and supportive treatment.
The target audience for this continuing education program is mental health providers and clinicians working with individuals with mental health diagnoses. Materials are appropriate for learners with an introductory level of understanding about mental health concerns.
Educational Objectives:
Following this presentation, participants will be able to…
- Identify common patterns of symptom overlap between eating disorders and mood and anxiety disorders that may obscure diagnostic clarity.
- Develop evidence-based interventions that are tailored to address both primary and secondary symptoms in clients with co-occurring eating and mood disorders.
- Formulate collaborative treatment approaches that address both eating disorder symptoms and underlying mood and anxiety disorders.
