Tri-State teen turns personal struggles into hope with 'Letters of Love' initiative

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and one teen is trying to help others with a nonprofit.

After struggling with her own issues, a Tri-State teen is doing what she can to try and help others battling their own mental health issues.

Lauren McCool, a local high school student, is spreading joy and happiness through her nonprofit, Lauren's Letters of Love, after overcoming personal challenges. McCool, who struggled with depression and an eating disorder during her freshman year, found solace in a handwritten letter from a friend during her inpatient treatment at the Eating Recovery Center in Norwood.

Lauren McCool detailed how her depression led to an eating disorder.

"I became more conscious of what I looked like. And that's when I started recognizing I don't want to change how my body looks. Looking in the mirror, I just felt repulsed by myself. I was like, I don't want to keep doing this, and that's when my eating disorder full-on started," McCool said.
