Who We Treat

Conditions We Treat

  • Eating Disorders

An eating disorder is a treatable mental illness that includes a number of different symptoms, including extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues.

  • Anorexia

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by an obsessive fear of weight gain and a refusal to maintain a healthy body weight.

  • Atypical Anorexia

You can’t tell if someone has an eating disorder just by looking at them. See how atypical anorexia affects people in a variety of body shapes and sizes.

  • ARFID

ARFID is a lesser known eating disorder that frequently begins as early as infancy or childhood, but adults can also suffer.

  • Binge Eating Disorder

Binge eating disorder is characterized by frequent overeating – at least once a week for three months – combined with a lack of control, intense feelings of distress and several other characteristic behaviors.

  • Bulimia

Bulimia is characterized by patterns of bingeing and purging.

  • Compulsive Overeating

Compulsive overeating can involve binge eating and weight gain, but it can also involve other behaviors.

  • Diabulimia

The term diabulimia is used to describe the diagnosis of an eating disorder in an individual with type 1 diabetes. These patients intentionally misuse insulin for weight control.

  • OSFED

Some eating disorders do not meet all of the diagnostic criteria for specific diagnoses like anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

  • Orthorexia

Some people go to extremes to “eat clean” at all times. This may lead to a disordered eating pattern known as orthorexia.

Levels of Care Offered

  • Inpatient

Our Inpatient programming is designed to support adults, children and adolescents of all genders who are acutely ill and are experiencing medical and mood instability as a result of their eating disorder.

  • Residential

Within ERC Pathlight's step-down model of care, the Residential eating disorder treatment program as well as the Residential mood & anxiety treatment program offer medically stable patients a highly-structured and supportive 24-hour treatment environment.

  • Partial Hospitalization

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) offers some of the same intensity and structure of Residential mood, anxiety, and eating disorder treatment while providing additional opportunities to practice recovery outside of the controlled eating disorder treatment environment during evenings at home or in peer-supported apartment communities.

  • On-Site Intensive Outpatient Treatment

Our Intensive Outpatient program is a flexible mood, anxiety, and eating disorder treatment program that allows patients to work, go to school, or care for children during the day and sleep at home at night.

  • Virtual Intensive Outpatient - Eating Recovery At Home

ERC is removing the barriers that can keep patients with anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders from receiving treatment. Through telebehavioral health programming, Eating Recovery At Home (our virtual Intensive Outpatient Program) offers the same proven care as our in-person treatment centers.

A path to healing as unique as you are

A caring, compassionate multidisciplinary team is a critical factor in helping patients navigate the challenges of eating disorder treatment. Each clinician at ERC Houston respects the patient as a person – not their condition. These team members provide unparalleled expertise and the capability to treat highly complex cases with multiple diagnoses and co-occurring conditions. Your wraparound support team will include:

  • Psychiatrist
  • Primary therapist
  • Registered dietitian
  • Primary care physician
  • Nursing staff
  • Program therapists and behavioral health counselors
  • Alumni support

While treatment eventually comes to an end, our commitment to you does not. We provide individualized, post-discharge recovery plan support, ongoing alumni events, support groups and resources to help ensure you continue on a path of lasting recovery.

PHP: Eating Disorder Day Treatment — Backed by Research

Eating disorders don’t take the weekend off. Patients stepping down from residential care to our 7-day PHP receive critical support and skills building 7 full days a week. Unlike other centers that offer 5-day PHP programming, we work with our patients on weekends, offering consistency and daily structure to support continued progress in recovery. Each day, we offer supportive supervision for all daily meals and most snacks by trained staff who help patients with emotion regulation during mealtimes.

Nutrition Services

Nutrition Counseling & Education

ERC Houston’s nutrition program includes “innings” (meal support on-site) and “outings” (meal support off-site). Clinical staff join adult PHP patients for a lunch or a snack off-site to help them practice recovery skills in environments similar to what they see outside of treatment. ERC Houston is also committed to experiential kitchen tutorials and engaging in education with patients, including:

  • Practicing knife skills, prepping food and creating snacks with a registered dietitian
  • Learning about the benefits of macronutrients through 1:1 sessions with a registered dietitian
  • Participating in nutrition groups to create butter sculptures and work hands-on with triggering foods
  • Making dough for personal pizzas and enjoying the food they created afterwards, while practicing portioning

The staff at ERC Houston is highly flexible and willing to work closely with patients on different experiential therapies, including clothes shopping, outings to grocery stores and more.

Apartment Housing Provided for PHP

For patients who require housing during PHP, ERC Houston has two apartments nearby that can support adult patients or adolescents with caregivers. If those apartments are full, we work with a nearby hotel to ensure patients have a comfortable, supportive and close place to stay during treatment. Additionally, for out-of-town patients who require additional travel support, we have a dedicated Travel Concierge who assists with a variety of needs before and during treatment. Whatever your specific needs are, ERC Houston is here to make the transition to treatment as easy and worry-free as possible. Click the link below to learn more about our travel concierge services.

Support and Education for the Whole Family

Effective treatment for kids and teens

ERC Houston uses key evidence-based interventions in tandem with experiential work to support patients in all aspects of their treatment and continued recovery.

  • Clinicians use evidence-based interventions including ACT, DBT, and CBT based in body image, self-compassion, healthy relationships and other ‘stuck points’
  • Patients participate in process groups three times a week in addition to individual therapy and psychoeducation
  • Experiential learning includes mirror exposures and body image exposures to give patients the best chance at long-term recovery

Providing families with guidance and care

Our team provides unparalleled support to families, caregivers and friends to ensure they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources to support their loved ones.

Academic support provided for students

Working with child and adolescent patients 12 and up involves coordination with academics and school-related activities. ERC Houston employs a certified Education Specialist who works collaboratively with patients, families and school personnel on keeping up with schoolwork and maintaining active participation in academic life. Adolescent patients have monitored school time 1-2 hours each day during the school year; outside tutors can also work with them on-site. Our team will accommodate patients who learn virtually or require homebound schooling — always working to keep recovery as the primary focus and priority.
